First Baptist Church of La Feria Hosts Rainforest-Themed Vacation Bible School

More than 80 children and volunteers gathered this week at First Baptist Church of La Feria for a fun-filled Vacation Bible School, where lessons about God’s love were combined with crafts, games, music and fellowship.
Children’s Director Katie Johnson said this year’s theme, “Rainforest Falls,” was chosen because it teaches children about God’s creation and reminds them that God is always present, even when He cannot be seen.
“I liked the content because it talks about God’s creations and His love,” Johnson said. “God is a safe place forever. You can’t see Him, but He’s there.”
Johnson explained that one of the week’s featured Bible lessons centered around the story of “Dr. Butterfly,” an allegory that teaches children about faith. In the story, someone searches for a butterfly that cannot be seen, yet there is evidence it exists.
“It teaches the kids that God is with us all the time,” Johnson said.

The five-day program welcomed approximately 85 participants, including 27 volunteer workers, with the remaining attendees being children. Although organizers had planned for about 100 participants, Johnson said the turnout was a success.
“We don’t charge anything,” she said. “Everyone is welcome. We welcome all families to our church. We are a very loving church family.”
Each evening included a free dinner, Bible lessons, worship, arts and crafts, and outdoor recreation. Children created tie-dye T-shirts, jungle hats, binoculars for “bird watching,” and colorful rainforest bird feathers that were added to a large parrot display as a collaborative art project. They also enjoyed outdoor games and friendly competitions made possible by favorable weather.
“The café was awesome, dinner every night, and the decorations were fabulous,” Johnson said. “Our teachers are outstanding.”
Johnson, who has been a member of First Baptist Church of La Feria for more than 50 years and has served as children’s director for over two decades, said Vacation Bible School remains one of the highlights of her ministry.
“It’s heartwarming to see them come to know Christ,” she said.
As the final day of Vacation Bible School came to a close, Johnson said many children were already asking when they could return.
“It was a very, very, very good Vacation Bible School,” she said.
